Banner Stand Buying Guide
Trade Show Banner Stands: Types, Sizes & How to Choose
A banner stand is the fastest, lowest-cost way to put your brand in front of a crowd. It fits in a carry bag, sets up in minutes without tools, and works on its own in a small booth or alongside a full backwall.
Every banner stand from APG ships complete: hardware, a custom-printed graphic, and a bag or case. Below you'll find how the six main types compare, which one fits your booth, and when it's worth stepping up from vinyl to fabric or from standard to backlit.

What Is a Trade Show Banner Stand?
A trade show banner stand is a freestanding, portable display that holds a single printed graphic upright, usually about 3 feet wide and 7 feet tall. It needs no wall, no tools and no booth structure, which is why it is the most common display at trade shows, conferences, lobbies and retail events.
The type of stand decides how the graphic is held. A retractable stand rolls the graphic into its base. A telescopic stand stretches it between adjustable poles. An SEG frame stand presses a fabric graphic into an aluminum frame. A backlit stand lights that fabric from inside. The graphic can be the same artwork in each case, but the look, setup time and lifespan are different.
Two facts are worth knowing up front. Banner stands are the cheapest way to add branding to a booth, but a single stand won't fill a 10ft backwall on its own. And you can't move a graphic between stand types, because each one uses a different print format and attachment. Choose the stand type first, then design the graphic for it.

6
Extra-Wide Banner Stands
About 4 to 5 feet wide. One graphic covers the space two standard stands would, and it reads from farther down the aisle.

Retractable Banner Stands
Not All Retractables Are Built the Same
From across the aisle, most retractable banner stands look the same. The difference shows up after a dozen shows: how smoothly the graphic rolls, whether the base wobbles, and whether you can change the graphic without buying a new stand.
- Variable height: adjustable poles let one stand run shorter under low ceilings or full height on the show floor.
- Cassette systems: on models like the Imagine, the graphic and roller come out as one piece, so you can swap messages in seconds.
- Anti-curl vinyl: the standard graphic lies flat and stays flat. Upgrade to dye-sub fabric for a softer, glare-free finish.
- Stable bases: swivel feet and wider bases keep taller and wider stands steady in a busy aisle.
The Smart Middle Ground
Line Up Banner Stands to Build a Backwall
A 10ft backwall doesn't have to be one big display. Three banner stands side by side cover the back of a 10x10 booth, pack small, and split up later for lobbies, smaller events or a second team on the road.
The Quickwall does exactly that: three retractable stands that line up into a wall about 8 feet wide, with graphics designed to read as one image, all packed in one hard case. It's one of our most popular ways to fill a first booth without a full display system.

Buying Guide
How to Choose the Right Banner Stand
Three questions settle most choices: where the stand will sit, how often it travels, and how premium it needs to look.
Where It Stands
- Against a wall or backdrop: a single-sided stand is all you need.
- At an aisle corner, in a lobby or on an open floor: go double-sided so it works from both directions.
- Filling a 10ft backwall: line up three stands, or step up to one extra-wide or telescopic stand.
- Outside the hall: choose an outdoor banner stand built to handle wind.
How Often It Travels
- A few events a year: a standard retractable keeps the cost per show low.
- Monthly or more: choose a sturdier base, a padded or hard case, and a model with replacement parts available.
- Changing campaigns often: cassette retractables or SEG fabric frames make graphic swaps quick and cheap.
How It Needs to Look
- Budget-first: anti-curl vinyl on a retractable.
- Premium and glare-free: dye-sublimated fabric, either on a retractable or an SEG frame.
- Standout: a backlit stand, which draws attention in any hall lighting.
- Matching an SEG booth: an SEG fabric frame looks like it belongs with the backwall.
Graphic Materials
Vinyl or Fabric: What Your Graphic Is Printed On
Most retractable banner stands come standard with 13oz anti-curl vinyl. It's durable, holds sharp color, and stays flat as it rolls in and out of the base, which makes it the right choice for most first banners.
Dye-sublimated fabric costs a little more and looks noticeably more premium. The ink becomes part of the fabric, so there's no glare under show lighting, and the fabric resists creasing. SEG frames and backlit stands use fabric only, and most retractables offer it as an upgrade.
Backlit Banner Stands
When a Banner Stand Should Light Up
A backlit banner stand is a single-panel lightbox. LEDs inside the frame light a translucent fabric graphic evenly from behind, so the image stays bright however dim the hall is. It's the biggest visibility jump you can make without adding floor space.
- Powers from one standard wall outlet.
- Tool-free frame; the fabric graphic pushes into place.
- Reuse the frame and LEDs, and just reorder the graphic.
- Retractable graphics can't be reused in a lightbox, because backlit fabric is printed differently.

Setup and Care Tips
1
Let It Roll Slowly
Guide a retractable graphic back into the base by hand. A graphic that snaps back is the most common cause of creases and roller damage.
2
Pack It the Same Way Every Time
Poles, base and graphic each have a place in the bag or case. Packing them consistently prevents bent poles and scuffed prints.
3
Store It Flat and Dry
Store stands lying down, away from heat. Wash fabric graphics according to the care instructions and let them dry fully before packing.
4
Replace Parts, Not Stands
Poles, bags and graphics can usually be replaced on their own, so a lost pole doesn't mean a new banner stand.
Replacement Graphics
Update the Message. Keep the Stand.
When your logo, product or campaign changes, you usually don't need a new banner stand. We print replacement graphics for most models. On cassette retractables, SEG frames and backlit stands, the swap takes minutes.
- Replacement graphics for most retractable, fabric and backlit stands.
- Vinyl or dye-sub fabric options.
- Single-sided and double-sided printing.
- A lower-cost way to refresh a booth before a new season of shows.

FAQ
Trade Show Banner Stand FAQs
What size are trade show banner stands?
The most common floor banner stand is about 33 in. to 36 in. wide and 80 in. to 90 in. tall. Tabletop models are much smaller. Extra-wide stands run about 4 to 5 feet wide, and telescopic stands adjust to 10 feet or more in both width and height.
How do you set up a retractable banner stand?
Open the base feet, assemble the support pole, then pull the graphic up out of the base and hook its top rail onto the pole. Most retractable banner stands set up in about 5 minutes with one person and no tools.
What's the difference between a retractable and an SEG fabric banner stand?
A retractable stand rolls the graphic into its base for travel, usually on anti-curl vinyl. An SEG stand uses a lightweight aluminum frame with a dye-sublimated fabric graphic pushed into a channel around the edge. SEG gives a smoother, glare-free, more premium look and the easiest graphic changes. Retractables cost less and pack smaller.
Are banner stands single-sided or double-sided?
Both are available. Single-sided stands work best against a wall or backdrop. Double-sided stands are seen from both directions, which makes them the better choice at aisle intersections, in lobbies and on open floors.
How many banner stands do I need for a 10x10 booth?
Three standard 3ft stands placed side by side cover the back of a 10x10 booth, which is exactly how the Quickwall banner stand wall is designed. For a single graphic across the back, use an extra-wide or telescopic stand, or step up to a full 10ft backwall display.
Can I replace the graphic on my banner stand?
Yes. We print replacement graphics for most models, so you can update your message without buying new hardware. Cassette retractables, SEG fabric frames and backlit stands make the swap especially quick. Prefer not to do it yourself? When you buy a new graphic, send us your hardware and our team will install it. You only pay the shipping. Step-by-step videos for Mosquito, Imagine and Barracuda stands are in the guide above.
Do backlit banner stands need special power?
No. A backlit banner stand runs from one standard wall outlet. At a trade show you will usually need to order booth electrical from the show's general contractor. Note that backlit stands use a translucent fabric graphic, so a retractable banner graphic can't be moved into a lightbox.
Can I use a banner stand outdoors?
Standard indoor banner stands aren't built for wind. For outdoor events, choose an outdoor banner stand built for wind and outdoor conditions.
How long does it take to get a custom banner stand?
At checkout, the "Delivery Date Needed" field shows the first available delivery date for your stand, based on ordering with good, print-ready art that day and choosing ground shipping. For most products, delivery is typically 10 to 12 business days from the time we receive print-ready art. The ordering process page explains each step.
